Overwatering. The BIG Plant Villain!

Hello, my Plant Junkies!!!

Today I want to talk to you about overwatering. Plant parents often associate watering with good care and there is this misconception that the more you water the better care you are giving. It’s not true at all, and when clients come to me with plant problems, most of the time overwatering is involved. To make sure you are watering your plant babies properly you need to take 4 things into consideration.

  1. The type of plant you have and if it likes to be watered throughout or if it prefers smaller drinks of water each time.

  2. The placement of the plant. Plants in a high light setup will use the water faster than when placed in a medium light setup. So adjust frequency accordingly.

  3. The size of the planter is a good indicator of the quantity of water the plant will need. Less is always more as you can add more water but you can’t really dry the soil faster if you give it too much.

  4. Drainage hole. Of course a drainage hole is a great tool and it can help you prevent overwatering by eliminating any excess water. That being said you can still have healthy and happy plants without drainage if you figure out and understand the frequency/quantity your plant needs each time. Most of the time when I do my big residential/commercial installs I do not use drainage holes as I give the client a strict watering schedule to follow while taking these conditions into consideration.

The success rate is really high when all of these factors (plant type/placement of plant/size of planter) are taken into consideration. So get to know your plant in your environment and remember less is more.

Have a plantastic day empowered by plants.

Xoxo. Izabela.
